"The talent of success is nothing more than doing what you can do well."

Lorinda Spellman wrote that in my great grandmother's autograph book in the mid-1890s, and the sentiment rings true almost 120 years later.

These words would be wonderful reassurance to a new graduate or someone setting out on a new business venture - a little vote of confidence to follow their own path. I've paired this small, sweet phrase with one of my own drawings of a sunflower, cropped and printed in bright sunflower yellow.

This card is one in a series of Autograph Cards that grew out of my love for my great grandmother's own autograph book from the 1890s, which my dad now has and keeps safe. The entire book was filled with messages of love and friendship from her friends and family; beautiful poems and phrases from more than a century ago, scratched out in elegant penmanship.

I've hand lettered messages from her book for each of these cards, mimicking the scrawl of my great grandmother Edna Foster Campbell's loved ones, and paired each with a botanical drawing of my own.
