I spent this afternoon at Memories Out of the Box, for the first of a few workshops I’m teaching there over the next few months. Today was all about Japanese stab binding techniques. These aren’t techniques I use often in my own binding, but they’re a useful way to start understanding the basic concepts, decisions and materials involved in binding. And, if I do say so, I like the couple of books I finished during today’s session…so much that I may start doing a series of simple, stab-bound notebooks. What do you think?
I also spent a large part of the day just getting organized (I’ve been out of practice with this whole small business thing just long enough!), and also finishing up a journal for a certain good friend who I already miss, now that she’s back in the snowy tundra!
Up next? Matt & I are going to be working together designing, laying out, printing and binding a small run book of my dad’s stories. Yes, folks. She starts letterpress printing and, 5 short months later, she’s doing a full book. It’s silly. But here we go! It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time and we all had enough time together over the holidays to kick around ideas and, well, we’re just gonna do it! Any tips are welcome…we’re just excited to be working together on this project and I think it’s going to be wonderful when they’re done!
