Description

This set of 12 letterpress printed panels lays out all of 2009 in each two-color square panel. The backgrounds for each month of the calendar focus on the texture and color of each season. These are printed on Crane's 100% cotton stock and packaged in a chocolate brown folio. They are finished with a letterpress printed label and a 1" band of a map, cut from a 1950s world atlas.

Each month...

January...The chocolate brown text and numbers are on a background that is the red top of my Lucky Joe bank. Everyone in my family has one of these antique Chicago mustard jars with a coin slot. Ours sits on our living room windowsill to catch the sun as it comes up every morning.

February... This blue calendar is printed over a pale turquoise image of my Grandmother Maggie's perfume bottle. She is no longer with us, but we have a beautiful things we keep close and seeing them every day is a gentle and lovely reminder of how much elegance and love she brought to our lives.

March...the bright green numbers rest on a pale blue outline of the Manhattan Bridge, with just a hint of Manhattan skyline along the bottom. The green text of the numbers seemed like a nice reminder that even when it's cold and grey there are a lot of beautiful things to come.

April...green text sits against a champagne colored background is a detail of a design in one of the 1920s copies of La Petit Echo de la Mode, a French fashion magazine I found several issues of last year and am now using segments of for handbound journal covers.

May...brown numbers sit next to a bright, leaf green cherry blossom drawing of mine, one of the true signs of spring.

June...bright green numbers and a lime green coffee plant show off the energy and color of summer months. Everything is coming alive and the color is back in full swing!

July...heat made the green numbers on a bright orange background seem appropriate. The architectural, straight lines and angles behind the numbers are actually a detail of The Cyclone roller coaster on Coney Island.

August...full of tomatoes....and peppers, and eggplants, but the tomato is what it's all about for me. One of my most vivid memories of growing up in Iowa in the middle of a beastly hot summer is the smell of fresh tomatoes. There's not much that's better than a fresh tomato.

September...will always be about going back to routines, bringing down the temperature, the volume, and the intensity of summer. The brown numbers sit against a cool blue geometric pattern; a detail of arches on a building on Coney Island.

October...I'm not sure whether other people have the same association I do, but October is about love. This orange sherbet-colored background is a detail of a Moroccan tabletop that we sat at in Ouarzazate, Morocco, the morning of the day Matt proposed to me 2 1/2 years ago.

November...home to one of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving. The brown numbers of fall here rest atop a champagne colored image of champagne glasses and candlesticks at last year's Thanksgiving dinner. It's a celebratory, but calm holiday and one that always brings us a lot of joy.

December...with parents and grandparents in my life who have always made the most out of Christmas, this is another month that's all about love and warmth for me. The background here is printed in champagne ink, behind red numbers, and is of an astronomy illustration from the 1860s defining binary stars. The definition reads: "These Stars revolve around a common Centre of Gravity between them, and appear Single unless viewed with a Good Telescope."

Here's to all the joy we can handle in 2009...and more!
