Custom letterpress Maine invitations

Plates for printing invitation samples for the new designs arrive next week (yay, Boxcar!), and there are a lot of custom projects going out of here on a daily basis. The wheels, they’re turning!

I realized I haven’t shared any images of a lot of the recent custom letterpress work I’ve been up to, and I figured you might like to see some past projects before I inundate you with new invitation designs in the next few weeks! So…get ready for lotsa pictures, most of which include this great sliver of light that hits my work table in the morning…I figured I’d run with it, instead of trying to block it out!

The first series of things to share is an invitation set for a bit of a destination wedding. Like Matt & myself (and apparently lots of people!), the couple has a love for Maine, and is having their wedding there over a long weekend in the fall. The initial idea was to design a set of invitations and components that were loosely based on 1940s travel brochures and postcards.

Photopolymer plates for printing, along with some of the early tests for impression, color, and registration (placement).

We used Crane’s Lettra for this project because it allows for a great impression, and we didn’t have much room to play with the impression on these – since it’s a two-sided piece, you don’t want one side’s impression to pop through on the reverse.

Working prints from setting up each plate to the templates.

As you can probably see from some of these shots, I created a series of Maine-ish drawings that were set inside of the letters M-A-I-N-E on the front of the invite, printed in a pale green, and I also created a hand drawn map of the Southern Maine coast that is the background for the interior of the invitation, again in a pale green.

This was an information-heavy piece and I think it came together really nicely, without feeling cluttered and busy. If I may say so, it’s also a really nice reflection of the sense of fun that the couple has with absolutely everything, including wedding planning!

And, if you’d like to keep up with every little teeny tiny update, you can also follow a lot of progress these days on Facebook, Flickr, and (gulp) Twitter! More photos and projects soon!
